Choosing the Right Containers

Categories: Kitchen Mastery

Choosing good containers for storing food is important for keeping food fresh, extending its shelf life, and ultimately reducing food waste. With so many options available, it can get a bit overwhelming to know what’s best. Everyone’s household is different, so what’s most important is finding containers that work for you and your routine, whether that’s zip lock bags, or sturdy containers to last a lifetime.

Keep It Airtight

The most important feature of a good storage container is an airtight seal. This prevents air from entering the container, which helps food last longer. Look for containers with good seals and secure locking mechanisms to keep your food fresh for longer.

I Can See Clearly Now

Whether clear zip lock bags or clear glass or plastic containers – the easier it is to see what’s inside, the better. Keeping your leftovers and items at risk of being wasted at eye level, in clear containers will mean you are more likely to eat it before it turns into that frozen mystery food in the depths of the freezer.

Right Tool For The Job

Consider the material of your containers based on how you plan to use them. It’s good to have options in the house so when you’re packing food away, you can put it in the right container. Glass containers are great for longevity and versatility as they can be used in the oven, microwave, and freezer but they can take up a fair bit of real estate in your fridge. Plastic or metal containers are lighter and more portable than glass, but if your food needs reheating it may mean an extra dish for washing up. Zip-lock bags can be great for packing single portion foods into your fridge or freezer like a filing cabinet to maximise space, but can be a bit tricky if you want to take your leftover soup to work on the train.

Does Size Matter?

Having a variety of sizes of containers means you can make sure you are storing your food, not taking up precious fridge and freezer space with air. Smaller containers work well for portioning meals to have an easy to grab, lunch-sized leftover morsel. Choosing stackable containers also helps maximise fridge and freezer space, keeping everything organised.

Label Me to Unwaste Me

It’s easy to forget how long leftovers have been in the fridge, or whether that container in the back of the fridge was Tuesday’s stir fry, or some of last week’s curry. Whatever containers you use, think about how you can label them. For zip lock bags, a permanent Texta ‘leftover pasta 29/9’ right onto the bag is all you’ll need, but for containers you keep for a long time, think about how to best label your containers – like masking tape or stickers.
