How this was calculated
Cost of waste: Based on average per kg cost of 6-12 products per category from a supermarket in Sydney or Adelaide in February 2026. Estimated weight: Metric cups were converted to kilograms using an online food volume to weight conversion calculator and the average of 6-12 products was taken per category. One meal is assumed to weigh 500g. Emissions: Based on embedded carbon within the food and also emissions generated from the disposal route. A single factor is used for each food category which represents typical mixed food waste. Emissions from disposal is calculated using the 2025 Australian National Greenhouse Accounts Factors. Embedded carbon is based on a life cycle inventory database and determined through specifically commissioned work. Water usage: Based on the water used to produce food that is ultimately wasted. A single factor is used for each food category which represents typical mixed food waste. Water usage is based on a life cycle inventory database and determined through specifically commissioned work.
