The Leftovers Revolution Lives On!

Australians love food, but half of what we scrape into the bin each day is actually edible. On 29 September 2025, we launched the first ever Great Unwaste Day – a joyful, national moment to celebrate the food we already have and turn it into a meal worth sharing.

More than 23,000 households, workplaces and communities joined the Leftovers Revolution, proving that small actions can add up to a big impact.

And it doesn’t stop here. Every day is a chance to unwaste: take what you already have, turn it into something delicious, and inspire others to do the same.

Why Now?

We celebrate The Great Unwaste Day on 29 September – the UN’s International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste – as the perfect moment to spotlight household food waste, with a uniquely Australian flavour. It’s about having fun, eating what you already have, and showing that small actions, shared together, add up to real change

Imagine the impact of just one day

If every Australian household observed The Great Unwaste Day and stopped wasting edible food for just 24 hours, the results would be extraordinary:

  • 5,000 tonnes of food saved
  • CO₂ savings to power 4,500 homes for a year
  • $53 million back in our economy
