Campers Do It Better

Categories: Community Stories Unwaste Guides

When it comes to reducing food waste, campers simply do it best.

Cooking outdoors, whether in tents nestled among the bush, parked up by a beach or on a G’Day Parks campsite encourages creativity, careful planning, and using every bit of food. The good news is that there are smart habits from camper life we can bring into our own kitchens to reduce food waste.

So, why do campers do it better?

Top reasons

  • With a tiny fridge, and even smaller freezer: You learn pretty quick what’s worth bringing and what you need to eat up to clear space
  • You get a new found appreciation of limited resources: Water, power, food, all become much more precious than you previously imagined
  • Camping gets you crafty: With no backup UberEats, or ability to fulfil your random cravings, you learn to have fun and get crafty with what you have in the cupboards
  • Teamwork makes the (zero-waste) dream work: Campers love teaming up to share resources. It’s rare to find a family who won’t make use of a few leftover sausages when your family has had enough
  • Staying off-grid: Campers love to be out in nature. Less wasted food means less wasted money = more time off grid exploring. You never hear anyone camping just wishing they could be back in a supermarket
  • Great for the pockets: Not just for campers, but hey, who doesn’t like to stretch their dollars and dinners alike
  • Simple cooking: One pan, one fire, one delicious meal. Who needs to over complicate!

Meet our camping Great Unwasters: Kate, Matt & family aka @RollingWithBon

Kate, Matt, and their children are seasoned campers, having been on the road for the last eight months and are full-time advocates for all things unwasting.

Between juggling family life and exploring Australia, they’ve mastered the art of food planning.

They plan out grocery trips and lists before heading off-grid, and every leftover is transformed into the next meal.

Their secrets? Revealed below! It takes practice, but it’s all about knowing what and how much to bring, how to store food efficiently, and how to use what you have without wasting a thing. A mix of practicality and creativity: a perfect recipe for a zero food waste camping trip that benefits the planet, and your pockets, that can be brought back into households.

How to unwaste like a camper

Ultimately, we don’t mind where you start, or how you unwaste. As long as you’re trying!

Kate’s Best Tips

  1. Double-up your meals: Cook once, eat twice – we all know leftovers taste better the next day. We love to use our slow cooker to make bigger meals easier, and quicker
  2. Master your grocery list: Shop smart, not big. Write your grocery list, noting exactly how much you need for each thing. Don’t overbuy, or get tempted by specials or price reduced food that just end up going off quicker and chucked away
  3. Pick produce wisely: Naturally, some foods go off way quicker than others. When writing your list, think about what is going to last long enough. Carrots, cabbage, pumpkin and apples are all great for the long haul
  4. Clear, stackable containers: are a life changer! You can always see what leftovers you have left, and are also great for preparing upcoming meals
  5. Cook while you travel: If you’re travelling in a caravan or campervan, use this time to cook up a big meal in the slow cooker. Chicken soup with all our leftover veggies is a game changer – stops us from stopping for takeaways or having to cook when we get there, wasting valuable time!
  6. Frozen spinach: Don’t throw it out if it gets sad and wilted, chuck it in the freezer – perfect for sneaky veggie boosts into smoothies and pastas
  7. Frozen bananas: Peel them, chop them, ziploc them. Perfect for pancakes and baking
