7 Foods You’ll Thank Yourself for Freezing

Categories: Kitchen Mastery Unwaste Guides

None of us plan to waste food and we can’t always control how much we have left over.

Knowing what we can save in the freezer for later is key to reducing how much great food ends up in the bin.

Here are 7 things you may not have thought about freezing, that are great to have on hand.

1. Rice

Rice doesn’t last long in the fridge and re-heats really well from the freezer. Throw it in a container or bag and you have homemade microwavable rice without the price tag of supermarket packet versions.

2. Herbs

Herbs freeze really well in oil or water. Place the herbs into an ice cube tray, cover with oil or water and freeze. This gives you handy portions to add to cooking. Pop the cubes out and put into bags to save on freezer space.

3. Yoghurt

Particularly appropriate for parents of young children, yoghurt can be frozen in bite sized portions for a cold tasty snack. Healthy and fun this is a great way to avoid furry yoghurt going into the bin.

Peeled & Chopped Banana for Freezing

4. Bananas

Frozen bananas are fantastic added straight into smoothies and can be quickly defrosted for use in baking. Make sure to peel them before you freeze them as it’s a hell of a job to get frozen peel off afterwards.

5. Pasta

You might not immediately think of freezing cooked pasta but frozen lasagne is something we’re all comfortable with and it’s basically the same thing. Stir through your leftover sauce and put it into a container for a grab and go lunch.

Small pile of ham

6. Ham

There is no need to let sandwich meats go slimy in the fridge. Pop them in a zip lock bag in the freezer and use later on pizzas, in pasta sauces or in omelettes.

7. Tomatoes

While you may have planned to use your tomato in a salad or sandwich it can be chopped and frozen for use in soups or pasta sauces just like tinned tomatoes.
